Preventing Cavities with Sugar??

I know, it sounds crazy! How can we prevent cavities with one of the main things that causes them? Well, xylitol isn’t just any sugar. It is a naturally-occurring sugar compound (or sugar alcohol) that can be used to sweeten foods, mints or even toothpaste. Sugar alcohols are like hybrids of a sugar molecule and alcohol molecule. Their structure gives them the ability to stimulate the sweet taste receptors on the tongue.

Not only is it sweet, but xylitol also disarms the cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth! Studies have shown that five to 10 grams of xylitol a day can reduce the acid-producing bacteria by as much as 95% after six months. So with consistent use, that oral bacteria is virtually harmless.

Xylitol looks and tastes just like regular white table sugar, so side by side you may not be able to tell the difference, but xylitol has a much different effect on the bad bacteria in our mouths. Because the bacteria can’t metabolize xylitol, they cant create the acid byproduct that is created when bacteria eats up regular sugar. So the bacteria starve and die off!

So what should you do with this new information? Start buying products that are 100 percent sweetened with xylitol. There is everything from chewing gum to lollipops. So next time you have a craving for something sweet, trade out the white sugar for some xylitol!
